John Sevigny

  • My photography starts as an attempt to externalize what's inside me to better understand it, learn to live with it, to share it with those who might not see it. My art is also the opposite: internalizing the external. I’m drawn to tragedy and darkness, but only insofar as those things might reveal flickers of hope. I’m attracted to the gritty and frightening but this search is not an end in itself. It is recognition that knowledge hides behind veils of pain and suffering and can be known only by traveling through places of deep sadness.
